Bangladesh’s ODI captain, Tamim Iqbal, made a significant announcement on Thursday, revealing his decision to step down from the leading role of One Day Cricket for Bangladesh. The 34-year-old cricketer stated that he believed it would be in the best interest of the team for him to relinquish the captaincy. He even informed the Prime Minister about his decision.
Tamim’s resignation means he will not be leading the team in the upcoming Asia Cup. However, he has expressed his willingness to be part of the squad for the World Cup in India. Bangladesh Cricket Board’s cricket operations chairman, Jalal Yunus, confirmed these details.
Tamim meets with Jalal Yunus, chairman of Cricket Operation of BCB on Thursday evening at the house of BCB President. BCB president Nazmul Hasan Papon also attend at the meeting, After the meeting they announced to journalists about the decision.
With Tamim’s departure as captain, the Bangladesh Cricket Board is now tasked with selecting a new leader to guide the Tigers in the Asia Cup. The tournament begins on August 31, with Bangladesh facing Sri Lanka in Kandy. Their last group-stage fixture will be against Afghanistan on September 3.
